Last night was the celebration of Nawrooz, which is celebrated by whoever is following the Persian Calender (Iran, Afghanistan and who else hmm). Anyway, growing up it was a thing we used to celebrate with my family. My mom would clean the house and we would prepare sofreh haf seen and colour the eggs and stuff, it was fun and a good family gathering. The coolest thing was having the bean sprouts grow on a clay weeks in advance then break the clay after the celebration, representing something which I can't remember.
I am actually grateful I didn't know what the everything represents, its been 5 years that I haven't been home for Nawrooz, so I thought of reading about it. It has all sort of un-islamic traditions and beliefs (no wonder its celebrated by Bahais as well), I think this is another way the Iranians are trying to distinguish themselves from Islam. To think of it I don't even know why we call it Eid Nawrooz... damn I was brain washed as a kid.
But I gotta admit, it is kinda cool that we have our own calender and our own "NEW YEAR" or whatever, so I don't mind it. Not that I did anything special for it... ahm
